Opening Large Adobe Acrobat files with Internet Explorer

Here's a useful tip when opening large Adobe Acrobat files (such as the GRREAT News) from Microsoft Internet Explorer:

When you click on  a link to a large Acrobat file, it sometimes seems like nothing is happening after a while.  In fact, the file is still being downloaded into your browser, but a large file may go on for many minutes without you seeing anything to assure you this is taking place.   Instead of just clicking on the link, click with the right button of your mouse to show the drop down menu and then select "Save Target As".  You will then be prompted to choose a place on your hard drive to save the file.  Once the download is finished, open the file from your hard drive.

There are two advantages to using this procedure.  First, you will see a dialogue box on your screen showing the download process so you know everything is working.  Secondly, you can continue your browsing while the file is downloading in the background.

(You don't need to do this if you are using Netscape Navigator because Netscape shows you the progress of the download even if you just click normally to open it in the browser.)

GRREAT uses Version 8 of Adobe Acrobat.
If you  are using an older version, download a free copy of Version 5 from Adobe.
